Description

This icon depicts the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968), one of the martyrs of the Twentieth Century.  Ordained in the Baptist Church, he led the nonviolent resistance movement in the United States against racial oppression and injustice.  The number around his neck is from a mug shot taken while imprisoned.  The text on the scroll is from a 1961 speech.  Dr. King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, TN.

The artist, Robert Lentz, ofm, is a Franciscan friar currently stationed in Houston, TX.  His work is known around the world and reflects his experience among the poor in this country and in the Third World.

Mounted on a one-half inch thick wooden plaque, this icon has beveled edges and a satin finish.
